We are not new to website production and have a wealth of experience, so we can not only create a more effective website for you, but also do it faster. Stephen Bradley<\/b> - is a film graduate who has worked in new media since 1996. Before setting up Fastersites he worked at publisher Dorling Kindersley in London and Microsoft in Dublin. He has been producing websites since 2000 and for five years managed production of campaign websites at London based advertising agency Barkers for companies such as HSBC, Balfour Beatty and Abbey.<\/p>\r\n\t

From Ireland to the World<\/H2>\r\n\t
QEF Global based in Ireland is a world leader in fasteners and component supply to manufacturing. They had an existing website, but it did not meet their requirements for a smart, well-organised site that sold their committment to meeting client needs and international quality standards.<\/p>\r\n\t
Fastersites carefully planned a new architecture for the site, seperating it into sections for different target groups - those interested in supply chain solutions, those interested in specific products and existing customers with basic information needs. We produced a new site using striking graphics and careful layout to guide visitors through to the information they need.<\/p>\r\n\t
The site is a hit with staff and customers and is simple to maintain using the CMSimple system.<\/p>\r\n\t

Trans-European Express<\/h2>\r\n\t
An Italian Removal firm that provides services to personal and corporate customers across Europe faced problems co-ordinating the collection, transport and delivery between their offices in Italy and the UK. They needed a system to co-ordinate this and Fastersites created one from scratch.<\/p>\r\n\t
Fastersites carried out a full analysis to establish the requirements for the system. The system was built to work through web-browsers using the Cake PHP framework. This saved costs over proprietary software and ensured a stable, easily maintainable online system was built quickly.<\/p>\r\n\t
Now the staff can refer to the system online in Italy and the UK for all the information they need on jobs, loads, clients and invoices without any ongoing software licensing costs. The system is now being expanded for use by other removal companies.<\/p>\r\n\t

Fingerprint Digital provides printing and copying services in Worthing and is establishing itself for its mix of service and design. Fastersites created a site to promote this company in the area.<\/p>\r\n\t

Open Source Software and quality - 21\/4\/'08<\/h4>\r\n\t
While I can never get ideological or hardline about open source software, I support it as it can provide incredible value to end users. This is not only because it is very often provided to end users for free, but also because its method of production ensures that quality is part of the economics of its release. <\/p>\r\n\t
The economics of proprietrary software mean that however big a release's faults it is thrust onto the public with the marketing and distribution muscle that its cost of production warrants. Some software is very good , some is very bad. <\/p>\r\n\t
The real problem for open-source software is that it is generally released and given wider distribution through what one might describe as peer review. Thus it is the qualities as a piece of software rather than as a utility that provide the good reviews that provide visibility and therefore wider distribtution of certain pieces of software.<\/p> \r\n\t
This means that end-users needs' at some times count for less than what is cool software. This leads to software bloat and unnecessary functionality. Open Source is for me at its best when there is either a large or otherwise powerful user community forcing the development path of a relatively small development team. Good examples of this for me are Firefox and CakePHP.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\t\r\n\t
Social networking, multimedia and Open ID - 23\/2\/'08<\/h4>\r\n\t
I had a copy of OSCommerce installed and so let my daughter play online shops, before I knew it she had developed an online marketing campaign and all her friends were overloading the server trying to buy dolls - only kidding.<\/p>\r\n\t
\r\n\tSome things are fun to do online and some things aren't, but we do them anyway, because the end result is worth it. In my mind, going to an e-commerce site is one of those things. You're not likely to enjoy the process of paying for the product you want even with the best site in the world, but you do it because you want the product. The best that the functional paraphenalia of ecommerce sites can do is to become transparent so you can concentrate on what you are interested in. It is incredible the extent to which web forms in all their clunkiness as ways of interacting with computers have become transparent to most users. While Adobe have made quite a point of selling the improvement to sales that can be made from having an exciting Flash multimedia based shopping cart built in Flex, there has been very little take up of Flash based online shopping.<\/p>\r\n\t
\r\n\tI can see that collecting together your purchases and making payment is one area where there is litle need for engaging multimedia. Socialising is an area that I cannot believe people go in for online without the addtional cosiness that Flash\/Flex based multimedia can offer. I suppose that the environment in which you do the things you love can become more transparent, but that the core of social networking sites remains so resolutely dull and HTML based still suprises me. Although there is multimedia in social networking sites, it is mostly there for two purposes, playing games and presenting poorly taken photos. The core interface of most social networking sites is resolutely HTML with not a bit of Flash or AJAX interactiveness in sight or should that be \"in site\".<\/p>\r\n\r\n\t
Of course I should not be suprised with this when the great technological social phenomenon of mobile phones has been driven by the 160 plain text characters of text messages and not by multimedia messaging. Multimedia has its place, but there are places in which typing plain text and pressing a submit button is what users want because that is the interaction they are used to. What you are used to is generally what you trust and trust is probably as important in the world of social networking sites as it is in the world of online commerce, the users are after all putting online that most precious commodity - identity. \r\n\t<\/p>\r\n\t
Open ID<\/a> is a great idea. In summary it is a way of having a single online identity, instead of millions of online logins. It recently got a big boost with three (soon to be two?) big online players of Microsoft, Yahoo and Google joining their board and presumably swinging their considerable online muscle behind the standard. What Open ID needs now is a good metaphor so that it can break out to the great hordes of online users who plainly need to trust this technology to make it a success. People know instictively now how the public - private split of phones and email work with the public id and private receipt of messages. Users also know the dangers therein with unwanted cold calls and spam etc. \r\n\t<\/p>
\r\n\tThe utitlity of a single login to the web will make Open ID an easy sell and it will fly out the door. However, without people unsderstanding the concept of distributed authentication, users data will inevitably get compromised and the system will lose reputation and trustworthiness. It is difficult to know how to convey the magic that is public key cryptography in a simple way that people can understand in the same way that they understand the need for keeping email logins and their mobile phone safe. Open ID needs this to be a success. \r\n\t<\/p>\r\n\t

Programming isn't getting any easier - 28\/1\/'08<\/h4>\r\n\t
I met an old school friend a week ago. After all the double takes on each other, \"no its not you\", \"God how long is it now?\", \"Have you seen?\" etc. we chatted about computers, as you do! Amongst other things he teaches designers working on computer UI design. He complained how it was not possible to recommend a tool to easily mock up User Interfaces for designers. All sorts of things that were traditionally designed or put together in other ways are now being done on computers in a nice graphical interface - letters and other documents, record collections, project schedules, the list is endless. Meanwhile, putting together a computer or web interface is something that we still, even us experts, tend to do with computer code. \r\n\t<\/p>\r\n\t
\r\n\tDon't get me wrong I think computer code still works as a way to program the innards of computer systems, but for programming interfaces it leaves a lot to be desired. The sequential linguistic, non-visual nature of computer code is so far from the graphical interactive end result that there is a severe disconnect. Believe it or not, my first experience of computers was writing short computer programs on punched cards<\/a> by making little marks on them with a soft pencil and sending them off to get the results the next week on a printout wrapped around the cards in our school maths lessons. Using computer code, BASIC, to produce the written output made a lot of sense. Using computer code to produce the interactive graphical interface of websites and applications often seems wrong to me. <\/p>\r\n\t
When will there be a tool that enables the graphical design of graphical user interfaces? Some people might say that this would do me out of a job, but I think it would help in the communication process with clients if they could sketch out their ideas easily.
